Disney had been interested in making Lewis Carroll's tale of Alice in
Wonderland into a feature film for a number of years prior to its actual
creation. Originally, Walt Disney had the idea of creating a live-action
version of the story starring Mary Pickford. This was abandoned after
it was learned that Paramount was releasing just such a version under
their label. It wasn't until the late forties, following World War II,
that Disney reopened the project. This time, the intention was to create
an animated feature length classic, following closely Lewis Carroll's
beautifully bizarre and psychedelic imagery and shoreline. For this, Disney
hired David Hall, a well known and respected Hollywood artist and designer
to create the films basic concepts. The much anticipated result, was a
feature film that received phenomenal acclaim and success. Alice in
Wonderland is one of Disney's originally crowning animated classics.
